In late 2016, the Pelican Group of Lakes Improvement District was awarded a Conservation Partners Legacy Grant from the DNR for funding to complete a modification of the Fish Lake Dam into a Rock Arch Rapids Fishway. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also contributed funding from its Fish Passage program. PGOLID is working with Houston Engineering for survey, design and oversight of the project.
Flames shot high into the air in the small town of Ottertail Thursday night, as fire ripped through Periwinkle Marketplace, nearly spreading next door the liquor store. The dramatic scene along Highway 78 started around 8:30 p.m. as fire crews from eight communities attempted to put out the fire. Periwinkle was fully engulfed and well on its way to destruction, though, by the time crews arrived.

Stephen Clifford Stone, 26, of rural Waubun has been sentenced in Becker County District Court to five years in prison for felon in possession of a firearm, a felony. Fourth- and fifth-degree felony drug charges were dropped in a plea agreement. According to court records, at 10:14 p.m. on Nov. 17 he was pulled over by a tribal police officer on County Road 21 near Crane Lake after the vehicle he was driving was observed traveling over the fog line.
Nicholas Edward Durant, 27, of White Earth has been sentenced in Becker County District Court to nearly two years in prison for felony escape from custody. According to court records, on June 4 Detroit Lakes police were called to the Minnesota Department of Corrections' halfway house in Detroit Lakes on the report of Durant cutting off his GPS ankle bracelet and absconding. Police found it cut and sitting outside the back door of the residence. On July 16 Durant was located and returned to the custody of the Department of Corrections.
A felony arson charge has been dismissed against Laurene Lynn French, 41, of White Earth because she is deceased. She was accused of being involved in an arson fire at a Frazee building that held a hair salon and apartments. She died on Jan. 26 and the second-degree arson charge was dropped Jan. 31 in Becker County District Court.
Shayla Anne Osowski, 39, of rural Park Rapids has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for gross misdemeanor DWI. A felony charge of fifth-degree controlled substance crime was dismissed in a plea agreement. According to court records, on Sept. 29 a tribal police officer saw her car parked on Becker County Road 21, partially in the driving lane. Her head was down and she was not moving, apparently passed out with the engine running. An open box of Bud Light beer was in the back seat and an open can of Bud Light was in the cupholder.
DL's Mercil named as McNair Scholar Noah Mercil, Detroit Lakes, was among those students selected by the University of Wisconsin-Superior for its 2017-18 McNair Scholars Cohort. Students from UW-Superior, the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), and Northland College are all eligible for the program. Mercil is pursuing a degree in jazz studies at UMD.

Joshua Allen Croud, 30, of Ponsford has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony first-degree tampering with a witness to prevent testimony. According to court records, on Feb. 6 an agent with the West Central Minnesota Drug and Violent Crime Task Force was monitoring Croud's phone calls from the Becker County Jail. Allegedly, the agent found out Croud was calling individuals and telling the person on the other end of the call he was going to "kick that bitch's grill out ... I'm playing no games with her when I get out—she better not talk (obscenity)."
