Lakers seeded sixth in 8A hockey, open at Crookston

The Detroit Lakes boys hockey coaching staff went to Wednesday’s Section 8A seeding meeting coming off a home victory over Park Rapids and gained a rematch with No. 3 Crookston to open the playoffs.

The Lakers defeated the Panthers 4-1 at Kent Freeman Arena Tuesday night 4-1 to improve the 12-11-1.

Will Green had a pair of goals, including the game-winner at 9:15 of the first period, and added an assist.

Jackson Carlblom gave DL a 1-0 lead unassisted less than a minute before Green’s first. Green’s second followed at 13:35 and Park Rapids Shea Alto scored less than a minute later to head to the first intermission 3-1 Lakers.

Will Stowman had the only other goal in the game at 2:57 of the third period on a Green assist.

Blake Itzen made 27 saves to claim the victory in net. Austin Jerger stopped 39 DL shots.

DL has one non-section game remaining on the schedule at Little Falls Thursday, Feb. 15.

Warroad received the top seed in the playoffs, followed by East Grand Forks at No. 2.

Crookston (14-10) and DL met twice during the regular season and split 3-1 victories on home ice.

The Pirates eliminated the Lakers in DL last year 2-1 in overtime. The Lakers ended the Pirates’ season 5-4 in double overtime in 2016.
